Welcome to the first edition of Spicy Single Saturday, where I review a singular song release from a Dubstep artist and give it a listen and share it with you. Today we'll be covering the song Havoc by Sean Ziral.
Havoc is a free, self-released heavy bass tune by the prolific artist Sean Ziral. Let me tell you what - this guy releases music at an impressive pace, and in a wide array of genres. While Havoc isn't his most recent offering (he's released 4 songs since this one came out only a month ago), it fits the gritty trench style that I strive to highlight on this blog, so we're running with it.
Being honest, the intro left me wanting. With a riddim-standard drumbeat alongside sparse bass hits overlaying some atmospheric SFX, I wish there was a touch of melody or even voiceover to keep the intro from feeling like an afterthought to the drop. Being fair to the artist this is pretty standard in the riddim scene so I don't feel like this is a big detriment. I just like to be a proponent for more labor-of-love intros, even for drop-oriented music.
Moving onto the drop and HO-LY SHIT this goes hard. The drums absolutely slap through the mix, punching you right in the face on regular intervals while the classic riddim dubstep rhythm recursively delays until abruptly halting into UFO-sounding effects. Minor bass variations and a short vocal cut keeps things fresh throughout. The sound design, sample choice and even cover art all work really well here to make you feel like you're on Mothership Zeta fighting hordes of aliens.
The bridge is much the same as the intro, but I do have to say that the vocal sample's delay blends super well into the oscillating white noise sweep at the 1:52 mark. It really adds a flow to this section that brings us into the second drop nicely.
The second drop is different than the first drop, which is something I always appreciate since many artists don't feel it necessary to differentiate them. It's a bit more understated than the first drop with less of the delay shenanigans, but that's not to say it lacks energy or punch at all. This drop would be perfect for a double drop or a drop you'd use to build hype early in a set. As for casual listening, it slaps just fine.
Overall, Havoc a big tune that will feel right at home in any riddim Spotify list or DJ set. I would recommend it to any riddim fans looking to beef up their collection and I look forward to seeing what else Sean Ziral cooks up in the future.
FINAL VERDICT:
7/10
