The Friday Five - January 6th, 2023

Looking for some new heat to keep your car speakers warm during this winter season? Look no further than this week's Friday Five - the segment where I select five new songs released this week to share with you and give my thoughts on. They're not in order from least to favorite or anything, numbering things just makes things look nice. Enjoy and have a great weekend headbanging!

5. XaeboR - LOSING CONTROL

LOSING CONTROL serves to showcase XaeboR's gritty melodic style and how it's evolved over the years. The song really harkens back to 2011-era Circus Records sound while adding a huge amount of modern production value and cut-ins of thick and gritty tearout basses. XaeboR's sample selection and mixing is always rock solid, and this track is certainly no exception to that.

4. eugene - no internet

no internet by eugene released through JadÅ« Dala is a track you won't want to miss. Ethereal vocalizations alongside an ominous and deep beat flow perfectly into a massive, subwoofer shaking drop alongside midrange sound design that will leave you teary-eyed in the corner cradling your Serum manual begging for more. Support eugene and find out where to cop the track here:

3. WHOiSEE - COLOSSAL

COLOSSAL by WHOiSEE released through Noiseporn Records packs some massive heat. A very lightly melodic, FX heavy intro with an instantly recognizable vocal sample leads into a shaking, bouncing and robotic drop. I really like the unique song structure - each drop has been segmented with a bridge which essentially causes the song to have four drops, and really keeps things feeling varied and fresh.

2. Echo Drone - FLY

FLY by Echo Drone released through Echoes Collective deviates slightly from the tearout sound of the rest of this list, but it certainly doesn't lag behind. The track leads in with an infectious refrain about diamonds on wrists with a rustic sample triggered underneath. Drums come in confidently, and by the time the drop hits your head is sure to be bobbing. Varied clever bass modulation, vocal chops and - of course - echoes or delays throughout the first and second drop really keep this song interesting and leave little tidbits to be heard on second and third listens that you may have missed initially.

1. ERBES - Death!

Death! by ERBES released through Electronyze Me brings back the heavy trench/riddim sound. The intro builds tension and mystery masterfully before cutting to a scream then robotic "DEATH" that drops us headfirst into a deep, pulsating groove that slowly adds synth additions throughout. The understated synth chords in the bridge and outro add a feeling of wistfulness that compliments the deviousness of the drops. This song is just begging to be double dropped with any number of zesty riddim songs on offer already and should fit perfectly into your playlist.

LAYZ - EYE OF THE STORM EP Review

Eye of the Storm is the debut EP by bass music artist LAYZ , released through Bassweight Records . While this is the first EP for the LAYZ, she's certainly not new to the scene. Lost Lands and other mixes alongside a small handful of singles pad her back catalogue with enough cred for her to command respect in the scene. With just 3 tracks and coming in a hair over 10 minutes, Eye of the Storm keeps things brief but hectic.    INCOMING alongside RZRKT starts with a menacing SFX that continues under an equally menacing synth refrain. Different percussive elements fade in with quick hitting top percs skittering around with huge reverb tom hits adding tension to an already heightened mood. This really starts the EP out on a good foot as the mystique and energy really pulls you in, making you want to hear what comes next. The sound fades away as the track goes quiet before frantically speeding up with a snare roll and pulsing SFX before coming to a head wit...

The Friday Five - January 13th, 2023

This post was definitely, definitely posted on Friday and I definitely didn't forget to hit publish until early Saturday morning. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Anyway, welcome to this week's Friday Five - the segment where I select five new songs released this week to share with you and give my thoughts on. Remember that they're not in any particular order. Enjoy! 5. Babz - Ghost Ghost by Babz stars us off nice and gritty with a creepy and wobbly tune, released this week through the  Manic Mind Collective . Massive vibes and even more massiver bass make this track a great listen. Go have a listen and cop the free download now - https://soundcloud.com/thisisbabz/sets/ghost 4. EVILNET - SHADOW BEAST SHADOW BEAST by EVILNET is a self-released banger with a Hunt: Showdown-esque intro featuring plucky strings that lead into a giant, slowly chugging metallic drop. Huge tune that should make it into your rotation ASAP.  Support EVILNET and grab the free downloa...

An Introduction

I've never been great at introductions, but you have to rip the band-aid off at some point if you want to start something new. I'll try to keep this brief but concise, which is what I hope this blog will continue to be throughout time. I'll be posting new dubstep music announcements, trench or riddim dubstep reviews, and even some product reviews for music production equipment further down the line.      I'm Drew, and I'm a massive fan of music. I like virtually all music, but I've been particularly drawn to electronic music - especially dubstep/tearout - since around 2010 when I first heard "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" by Skrillex. I enjoyed what I referred to as "techno" before that (mostly trance with some hardstyle if we're being genre sticklers), but I considered dubstep to be random noises. I even went as far as calling it "not real music" for a short period. Yikes.      But something legitimately changed inside me wh...
